‘’Is it wise to jump straight to the design making stage?’’

The driving question I have chosen to explore in todays blog post is ‘’Is it wise to jump straight to the design making stage?’’, which is based around the stages of design and the processes involved. The key themes in this driving question are if it is reasonable to jump straight to the making stage when designing a project, this will be different for everyone based on one’s personal opinions and take from the question. Personally, before any prior knowledge of this topic and when I first read the question, I thought that it is not wise, due to my personal design experiences I have knowledge that the design process is overly complex and there is no specific sequence the process can occur in anyway.

My feelings towards this question as I stated before was that I personally believe it is not wise to jump straight to the design making stage, this is due to my personal design experiences where we would go through different stages before the creating stage. I think its valuable that designers do this to make sure they build that connection with issue and their clients, that they have explored multiple different ideas around their criteria before jumping straight to the making stage. After reading through (Dam, 2017) article it is

all about the stages involved and specifically talks about five important ones. However, the article does say how these stages are not always sequential, there is no order and can go in any way based on the design issue. Which personally I believe this backs up with my opinion and that you must go through different stages as design has not got one way of doing it. Therefore, after the readings that I did my opinion and feelings have not changed regarding this question.

Strengths for my opinion to this question would be that the article I found does state how design is a nonlinear process meaning you must go through different stages first before jumping straight to the end products. However, one could argue with that and find it as a weakness as some designers naturally think of end ideas for a product without needing to follow stages. I also found this article (Beckler-Jones, 2019) which talks about why the design process is so important and how it allows for us to be efficient and transparent when designing.

As I said earlier in this post my own personal experiences of taking a design class all through high school has shaped my opinion to be how it is as I was always taught to follow the stages and not jump straight to creating. The articles I read also helped strengthen my personal opinions. Following on from my research and findings for this question an action plan I would use when designing from now on would be to ensure I am sticking to the process and remembering that design is a nonlinear practice. The articles backed up my original ideas and supported them as well as giving me more knowledge on the topic.
